Throw It Out There Thursday!

Halloween is gone.

Thanksgiving is coming.

Christmas awaits in the not so distant future.

You know what that means, right?

Food. Lights. Food. Family. Food. Parties. Food. Mary. Food. Joseph. Food. Jesus. Food. Rudolph Inflatables. Food. Friends. Food. Fireplaces. Food. Lottie Moon. Food. Football. Food. . .

Wait. . . Lottie who?????

Unknown

Yes. It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Starting this Thursday – and every Thursday through the first part of the month of December – I’m gonna Throw This Out There: A WHOLE LOTTA LOTTIE!

Who is Lottie?

Why Lottie?

Why does Lottie need so much money?

What if we don’t give to Lottie?

Why is her name Lottie?

Pastor – are you pocketing some from Lottie? What’s the deal here?

I’m gonna talk a whole LOTTA about LOTTIE.

Let me start by pointing you to this site from the International Mission Board (IMB) website. You can find out all you want to about Lottie and her special offering here.

Today, let me simply whet your appetite by copying this info from the IMB site:

Lottie Moon – the namesake of the international missions offering – has become something of a legend to us. But in her time Lottie was anything but an untouchable hero. In fact, she was like today’s missionaries. She was a hard-working, deep-loving Southern Baptist who labored tirelessly so her people group could know Jesus.

Why was the offering named for this early missionary?

Throughout her career, Lottie Moon wrote numerous letters home, urging Southern Baptists to greater missions involvement and support. One of those letters triggered Southern Baptists’ first Christmas offering for international missions – enough to send three new missionaries to China.

I look forward to Throwing Out There some information about Lottie and her SUPER IMPORTANT offering.

Before I sign off – let me Throw This Out There – who can find out how tall Lottie was?

Comment below. . .The winner get to. . . um. . . .know how tall she was!

Look at that face. We’ve been paying her off for years, and she still ain’t happy.

And…my pastor may or may not have a life sized cardboard cutout of Lottie (NO idea why), and that cutout may or may not make it around our office, to hide out in dark corners and scare the bejeezers out of unsuspecting staff members.

I am glad to see you doing this, but sad. Why sad, anyone my age who grew up in a SBC was taught who she was and what she did. Not gonna take a stab at how tall she was, but want to ask does anyone else remember Annie Armstrong?

  3. cindysl says:

    Four foot three.
we probably have a sparky kid that could play that part for any reinactments you want to do 🙂
Look forward to learning more next Thursday.

This makes me think back to a couple of weeks ago when my little one came home from First Friends with a little bank for Lottie Moon Christmas offerings. I asked her what it was for. She told me it was for money for the missionaries. She then said she could give them her birthday money she had been saving up because Jesus would like that. Only 4 years old and she “gets it”. What a lesson for the rest of us.
