Today’s Reading: 2 Samuel 5, Ezekiel 15, 1 Corinthians 16, Psalm 53
Three helpful truths come to mind from David’s early days as King in 2 Samuel 5.
#1. Godly people will affirm what you are doing.
“So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel.” (v. 3)
For David, older and wiser and godly men affirmed him as King over the nation of Israel. For you, it will be someone who knows you well. Someone who walks with God. Someone (or several “someone’s”) who you know will “cut it straight” with you. If you want to know if you are in the will of God, go to those people and ask them about your life, your vocation, your habits, your trajectory.
#2. A sense that it is “right” will overwhelm your soul.
“And David became greater and greater, for the LORD, the God of hosts, was with him.” (v. 9)
“And David knew that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.” (v. 12)
David walked with the LORD and just knew he was doing exactly what had been ordained for him to do. I believe when you are doing what God has called you to do, you will have that same sense of “just knowing.” God will grant to your spirit a joy, a peace, a confirmation that you are doing what He has called you and created you to do.
#3. The LORD Himself will affirm your spirit.
“And David inquired of the LORD, ‘Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?’ And the LORD said to David, ‘Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.'” (v. 19)
“And when David inquired of the LORD, He said, ‘You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the LORD has gone out before you to strike down the armies of the Philistines.'” (v. 24)
King David had a unique relationship with the Lord. David didn’t just rely on feelings (see #2). He also had the LORD Himself to lead and confirm to him various things through His Word. The LORD does the same thing today. He will speak to you from His Word and affirm in your heart when you are in His will by pointing out specific things in the Bible to you as you read.
Are you in the will of God? Run your life trajectory through these three areas. What do you think? He doesn’t want you in the dark on this? What is He saying to your soul?
